DragonCon 2012 – SUCCESS!!!

Thanks to all that stopped by and supported our booth at DragonCon this year! It really was a fun, hectic, overwhelming, busy, bustling one! I spent most of my time in the booth this year and barely ventured out. This gave me a chance to visit with many of you and I have to say, that’s why I love doing shows/conventions. Like minds…kindred spirits!

I’ve vowed to start working on new concepts IMMEDIATELY….instead of waiting till the first of the year. While I’m not good at the small-talk on a daily/weekly basis, I hope that once I get chatting and sharing my work with you from the early stages…maybe, just maybe it’ll become easier for me as time goes on.

With all that said…. Today, I start anew! So much to do…so little time!

A few short months ago, I was looking for projects to develop a demo reel, to show my skills as a composite artist. That’s when Dim Horizon Studio called on me to do my magic with digital stills for the Galactic Perry World Premiere. Shortly thereafter, I was knee-deep in the project, dreaming up ways to introduce several of the sponsors of the event. Another test of the capabilities of my computer, and my recently upgraded adobe software.

Penny Dreadful Productions along with Dim Horizon Studio teamed up to during a recent event to stage a “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” themed set along with the costumed characters. From the stills, I developed a “mock” dvd menu featuring the still photos with looped audio.

I created this short video clip to simply test out my new puter. I rendered this clip on my old computer and it took roughly 7 minutes to render. On the new one – less than a minute. *cheers* Its really worth tailoring my computer to take advantage of the Adobe Mercury Playback Engine. For once, I can edit, create and render the final in a relatively timely manner!

Dim Horizon Studio thought this clip illustrates the potential for an upcoming project he has in mind.

Acid Etched Necklace

The process for acid etching copper is quite similar to the creation of circuit boards. A very abbreviated version of how you go about doing this: You prepare your metal with the design using a blocking agent, then immerse the metal briefly in nitric acid or ferric chloride. The acid eats away at the exposed metal. Once rinsed of acid, you clean away the blocking material and the design is exposed. You’ll find some great tutorials on the web for acid etching copper.

Once the etching was to my liking, I cleaned the metal and then silver brazed a nut hanger and additional gear elements to finish the look. Once totally cleaned, you can either leave it polished by applying a lacquer finish or allow the piece to develop it’s own natural patina. Copper is wonderful that way!
