The process for acid etching copper is quite similar to the creation of circuit boards. A very abbreviated version of how you go about doing this: You prepare your metal with the design using a blocking agent, then immerse the metal briefly in nitric acid or ferric chloride. The acid eats away at the exposed metal. Once rinsed of acid, you clean away the blocking material and the design is exposed.

Whenever I can, I search out pocketwatch parts with character, I try to use them to create something that enhances the workmanship of the original parts. This is an example of what I’ve done. No two are alike and its not often that I have enough parts to design more. All depends on what I can find.
